Good Hope Lutheran Church hosts ‘A Superhero Story’

From June 23-27, as part of its Vacation Bible School, Good Hope Lutheran Church hosted a production called “The Agape League: A Superhero Story about the Fruit of the Spirit,” a play about children working together and gaining special powers that enable them to do anything.
The production took place on June 27 at 7:30 p.m. After the nine-song, 40-minute play, there was an ice cream social with cake and punch.
“The Agape League is based on the Fruit of the Spirit and it’s a full production that the children are going to sing,” Good Hope Lutheran Church director of Christian education Ginny Eddy said. “There’s 11 children and one adult that have worked on memorizing their lines over the last three to four months. The kids are going to be quite surprised because by the time they’re done learning the routines and singing the songs throughout the week, we’re putting all the lines and the songs together and we’ll have a full production for all the families and the community.
“They’re all action packed and we have an 8 by 10-foot video screen that is an actual movie projector so that we have a full movie going on in the background while the kids are doing the acting and singing routines.”
Two of the children who had parts were Andrew Biggs and Katie Reilly.
“Miss Ginny gave me the video for the Agape League,” Biggs said of how he becomes part of the cast. “One day, my sister, my mom and I, we sat on the couch and we watched it. My sister and I got really interested, so we came to Sunday School and Miss Ginny asked if we wanted to be part of this. We said yeah, we would like to join this. Then we started coming to practices and we got more and more involved.”
Reilly said a lot of preparation went into her part.
“For preparation, I definitely had to memorize lines and songs,” she said. “I also came to practices. We performed once or twice in front of the church. We’ve had a lot of practices.
“I learned that you should always make sure you have your lines memorized before you do the play because it’s just easier. I also realized you have a lot of fun no matter what you’re doing.”
During the Vacation Bible School, there were many activities, such as games, crafts and stories, plus an obstacle course.
“The Agape League, which is about uniting all the children together in Christ,” Eddy said. “All the activities and the obstacle course will not be completed unless the children work together. Older children lift the younger ones over the various obstacles.”
Eddy said the main themes the children should have learned from the production were sharing and working together.
“I guarantee they will learn about sharing with others, not being all about me,” she said. “It’s going to be about caring and sharing and uniting in Christ’s love, and actually going out and sharing God’s word and the love of God with others.”
