Following May’s successful event for Mother’s Day, the Cornersburg Dairy Queen – along with its sister store in Austintown – hosted a cake decorating event on June 14 in honor of Father’s Day.
“Actually, I think I invented it,” store owner Chrissy Smith said. “I know others have copied it since. I always had the idea to do it since we had our walk-up store on Canfield Road. I used to let little kids write on their own cake for their dad. We’ve probably been doing it for at least five or six years. It’s been pretty successful for us.”
The cakes ranged in price from $19.99 for an eight-inch to $27.99 for a sheet cake. Customers bought a blank cake and were provided with sprinkles, jell, icing, ribbons and an airbrushing machine to decorate the cake as they wished. They could decorate either by themselves or with the help of Dairy Queen employees.
“We bring everything out and let them decorate it,” Smith said.
Smith said the Mother’s Day event attracted about 30 people to each store.
“It was pretty successful,” she said. “We didn’t have very many people signed up, but we have a lot of walk-ins anymore.”
Rachel Froehlich of Canfield brought her two sons, Micah Johnson and Braxton Froehlich, to the event, along with her sister, Amanda Froehlich Wince. While Micah watched, Braxton decorated a cake with images of tools and a football and colored it in Cleveland Browns colors of orange and brown. The cake was for Braxton’s and Micah’s father and grandfather.
“We came to do a Father’s Day cake for their grandpa [Larry Froehlich] and dad [Tim Wince],” Rachel said. “I think it’s so creative. It’s really cute.”
“They can spend time with their dad if they want to do it with their dad, or if they want to do it as a surprise for dad, then it would be the sweetest treat ever,” Smith said.
