OH WOW! The Roger & Gloria Jones Children’s Center for Science & Technology, 11 W. Federal St., is closed today to prepare for its annual fundraising event, The Science of Brewing. The museum will reopen at 10 a.m. Friday.

Hearing postponed

GIRARD

A preliminary hearing has been postponed for a man who is charged with 10 counts of pandering sexually oriented material involving a minor.

Eric Filicky, 26, who was to appear Wednesday in Girard Municipal Court, will have the hearing reset within the next 30 days, the court said.

Filicky, of Scott Street in Hubbard, was arrested at his home Monday.

Police said he had sexually oriented pictures and videos of children under 16 on his computer.

MVSD board meeting

The Board of Directors of the Mahoning Valley Sanitary District will have a meeting at 4 p.m. today in the assembly room at the district’s offices, 181 Ohltown-McDonald Road.

Contract talks with unions to begin

HUBBARD

The city will soon enter into talks with Fraternal Order of Police and the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees.

The city’s contract with its 12 full-time police officers is up in November, and its contract with AFSCME workers ends Dec. 31, Mayor John Darko said. AFSCME includes 34 street, electrical and water department workers, he said.

Items taken from shed

YOUNGSTOWN

A propane tank and a riding mower were taken from a shed in the 2000 block of Pointview Avenue.

Police were called to the home just after 4 p.m. Tuesday, where the homeowner said he went to his shed and found the padlock broken off the door and the items missing.

Police took the serial number for the riding mower as part of their investigation, reports said.

Fieldhouse break-in

YOUNGSTOWN

Police say someone broke into the former South High School Fieldhouse sometime early Tuesday afternoon.

Officers were called to the fieldhouse at 1840 Erie St. at about 1:50 p.m. for an alarm. When they arrived they found a door open and footprints on the gym floor. It also appeared someone had used a fire extinguisher, but no one was inside, reports said. A worker was called to fix the door, reports said.

Shooting investigation

SHARON, PA.

Police are looking for help from anyone who has information on Tuesday night’s shooting at 785 S. State Line Road.

Officers went there at 9:15 p.m. and found a resident, Stephen Scott Hougelman, 26, with a gunshot wound to the chest.

He was taken to Sharon Regional Health System, then to St. Elizabeth Health Care Center. St. Elizabeth had no update on his condition late Wednesday.

Police said there were two women, an 11-year-old girl and a 4-year-old boy in the house at the time of the shooting.

Mich. man charged

NEW CASTLE, PA.

D’Marco D. Hoskins, 22, of Highland Park, Mich., arraigned Wednesday in the killing Sunday of Thomas Lee Everett Paris, 43, of Ellwood City, is in Lawrence County Jail in lieu of $100,000 bond.

According to the Pennsylvania State Police here, Hoskins is charged in a separate incident concerning the shooting and killing of Paris at Walnut Ridge Apartments in Ellwood City.

When originally questioned by police about the homicide, Hoskins provided a false name and identity. It also was discovered he had misdemeanor warrants in Michigan.

As a result, police charged Hoskins with unsworn falsification to authorities and false identification to law enforcement authorities. Police said the investigation is continuing and more charges against him are pending.
