No injuries at Howland nursing home

HOWLAND — Firefighters responded to Shepherd of the Valley nursing home, 4100 North River Road, about 2 p.m. today for smoke in an elevator shaft, but there was no fire and no one was injured.

Fire Chief James Pantalone said an elevator motor overheated, filling the elevator room on the first floor with smoke and seeping out into the first-floor area.

A nursing home resident was trapped in an elevator on the third floor as a result of the breakdown, but she was removed by nursing home staff before firefighters arrived. None of the residents were evacuated.
