Scrappers win fifth straight game

STATE COLLEGE, PA.

The Mahoning Valley Scrappers got five shutout innings from their bullpen, which was enough to lift them to their fifth consecutive victory, a 3-1 win over the State College Spike on Tuesday night.

Edward Estrella pitched the fifth and six innings, allowing one hit, to earn the win. Luis Gomez pitched the next two innings and J.P. Feyereisen threw a perfect ninth inning to get his first save.

The Scrappers (16-22) climbed out of last place in the Pinckney Division of the New York-Penn League by defeating division-leader State College (26-12). They’ve won eight of their last 10 games.

Bradley Zimmer and Leo Castillo both went 2 for 4 with a run scored. Castillo drove in a run. Leadoff hitter Greg Allen was 3 for 5 with a triple and an RBI.

Mahoning Valley starter Cameron Hill allowed a leadoff walk to Darren Seferina in the third and Seferina later scored on a Jake Stone single to give the Spikes a 1-0 lead.

The Scrappers came back with two runs the next half inning and add an insurance run in the seventh.

Game two of the series is at 7:05 p.m. today.

Sean Brady (2-1, 2.52 ERA) will get the ball for the Scrappers, while Cody Lee Schumacher (1-0, 3.32) will put his unbeaten record on the line for the Spikes.
