Day two better for local juniors at Optimist

Palm Beach, Fla.

After poor opening rounds for two local golfers in the Optimist International Junior Golf Championships, day two provided slightly better results.

Boardman’s Ken Keller followed a first round 83 with a second round score of 82. The leader of the boys 14-15 year-old division is at 5-under par for the event.

Hubbard’s Skylar Ladig was three strokes better on Tuesday, posting an 85. The leader of the girls 13-14 year-old division is 8-under par.

Struthers’ Nick Braydich will compete in the boys 16-18 year-old division, starting Thursday.

Report: YSU’s Perry headed to Australia

YOUNGSTOWN

Youngstown State graduate Kendrick Perry will play for the Sydney Kings of the Australian National Basketball League, according to a report from Hoops.com.

Perry recently played for the Orlando Magic’s summer league team after going undrafted last month. Perry was a four-year starter for the Penguins, earning first team all-conference honors over his last three seasons.

City middle school football conditioning

YOUNGSTOWN

Football conditioning for Youngstown City Middle School’s seventh- and eighth-graders is being held weekdays from 9 to 11 a.m. at Chaney High School.

The conditioning sessions begain on Monday.

Area golfers competing at Ohio Publinx event

HARTVILLE

Dominic Carano of Canfield shot 74 and Justin Hallapy of Hubbard had a 75 on Tuesday in the first round of the OPGA Publinx Tournament at Seven Hills Country Club.

The leader, Jake McBride of Hartville, shot a 66. Nathan Tarter of Mogadore and Jake Houston of Lexington both shot 69.

Other area golfers: Jake Fait, Boardman, 77; Trevor Jones, Poland, 77; Thomas Lydic, Champion, 80; George Allen, Warren, 81; Jason McQuown, Poland, 83.

Fitch stadium closed for track renovation

AUSTINTOWN

The Fitch Falcon Stadium will be closed to the public beginning today until Monday for renovation of the track.

Saturday boxing show tickets still available

Tickets are still available for the “Night to be a Champion” boxing event scheduled Saturday at the Eastwood Expo Center.

The USA Amateur Boxing event features 15 bouts for $15. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the first fight is scheduled at 7.

Fitch golfers do well at Olde Dutch tournament

LAKE MILTON

Austintown Fitch sophomore golfers Anthony Catauro and Spencer Klema finished first and third at a junior tournament earlier this month at Olde Dutch Mill Golf Course.

Catauro shot a 76 to top the field of about 25 golfers. Klema had an 82.

Clipper Cross Country Series starts next week

Columbiana

The 16th annual Clipper Cross Country Series is scheduled at 7 p.m. on four straight Wednesdays beginning July 30 at the Ward Athletic Complex at Columbiana High School.

The races on July 30 and Aug. 13 are on the 1.85-mile middle school course and the competition on Aug. 6 and Aug. 20 will be on the 5K high school course. Registration begins at 6 p.m. each night and the event is a fund-raiser for the Columbiana cross country and track programs.

Those who run in all four races will earn a series T-shirt and the best overall finishers, male and female, in all four races will win a series championship trophy.
