Valley’s unemployment rate for June down from 2013

YOUNGSTOWN

The Mahoning Valley unemployment rate for June remains far below the rate from a year ago.

There are 16,400 people classified as unemployed in the Valley with a rate of 6.3 percent, compared to 22,200 unemployed and a 8.4 percent unemployment rate in June 2013, according to Ohio Labor Market Information figures provided by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services.

For the individual counties, Mahoning County’s unemployment rate fell from 8.6 percent in June 2013 to 6.2 percent this year, in Trumbull it went from 8.4 percent to 6.5 percent, and Columbiana dropped from 8.3 percent to 6.2 percent.

The drop in unemployment rate did come with an increase in jobs. The Valley added 2,400 jobs, but the area also saw the workforce reduced by 3,000 people. The reduction in the workforce is often caused by people falling off the unemployment roles, no longer seeking employment, or retiring.
