Scam nets $1,000 from Austintown man

AUSTINTOWN

A man was scammed out of $1,000 in a fake Publishers' Clearinghouse ploy.

According to a police report, a resident of Deborah Court was contacted Monday morning by someone claiming to be from Publishers' Clearinghouse and informed the man he had won several prizes.

The scam then had the man go to Walgreens to purchase two loadable $500 cards and mail the cards to the fake clearinghouse for the TV crews to show up at his home.

The scam also requested $1,400 for the delivery of a new car, but that was not sent to the scam.

The man contacted authorities at 10:19 p.m. Monday to file a report. The matter is under investigation.
