State parks offer military discounts

COLUMBUS

Ohio is offering a 10 percent discount to active or veteran members of the U.S. military for camping, getaway rentals, cottages and lodge rooms at the state’s nine state parks.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources began offering the discount last month.

Department Director James Zehringer also says a 20 percent military discount off camping, getaway rentals, cottages and lodge rooms will be offered this fall in honor of Veterans Day. That discount for active or veteran members of the military will be offered from Oct. 31 through Nov. 16.

Military discounts may only be used for a single campsite, getaway rental unit, cottage or lodge room per visit and must belong to the cardholder using the facility. Military identification must be presented at the time of arrival or check-in.

New hotel planned

RENO, Nev.

The managers of the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas have announced plans to open one at Lake Tahoe this winter after a $60 million renovation of the former Horizon Casino Resort at Stateline. Officials for the Las Vegas-based Warner Hospitality and the Tahoe-based Park family that owns the property say Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Lake Tahoe will include more than 500 hotel rooms and a 25,000-square-foot casino.

Observation deck

The tallest building in the West is getting a makeover that will include a sky-high observation deck and restaurant offering 360-degree views of metropolitan Los Angeles, from the mountains to offshore islands.

The 72-story U.S. Bank Tower will see about $50 million worth of improvements, including an upgrade of the lobby, the Los Angeles Times reported last week.

The downtown tower’s new owners hope to make the building a busy tourist attraction to rival New York’s Empire State Building and Chicago’s Willis Tower, both of which are more than 100 stories tall.

Montana residents and visitors have new ways to find out information about the Lewis & Clark National Historic Trail.

Free self-guided vacation adventure maps are available online at www.lewisandclarkcountry.org, while printed brochures and a variety of regionally focused Circle Tour maps can be picked up at local chambers of commerce and visitor centers across Montana.

Six self-guided Circle Tour vacation maps have been created for Montana. These highlight Lewis and Clark Expedition sites, visitor attractions in Montana communities and national and state parks along the trail.
