1989: One hundred eleven people are killed when United Air Lines Flight 232, a DC-10 which suffered the uncontained failure of its tail engine and the loss of hydraulic systems, crashes while making an emergency landing at Sioux City, Iowa; 185 other people survived.

1989: Youngstown City Council balks at transferring money into salary accounts for operation of the Youngstown Municipal Airport, which Finance Director Gary Kubic says could force the layoff of maintenance and security employees.
A fire destroys the Design Coating Systems plant at 1500 Milton SE in Warren, putting the jobs of 45 employees in jeopardy.

Youngstown native Joe Flynn, an actor best known for his portrayal of the gruff commander of a PT base on ABC-TV’s “McHale’s Navy,” is found dead in the swimming pool of his Hollywood home. He was 49.
1964: Dr. Sam Sheppard, freed from the Ohio Penitentiary while his conviction for killing his wife, Marilyn, in 1954 is appealed, weds Ariane Tebbenjohanns in Chicago with his attorney, F. Lee Bailey, as his best man.
