Sen. Portman visits GM Lordstown facility

LORDSTOWN— U.S. Sen. Rob Portman, cochairman of the Senate Auto Caucus, today visited the GM complex here, home of the Chevrolet Cruze, for the first time.

After a tour, the Republican senator said his visit was, “A really inspiring experience.” Portman said he was impressed with the car, the plant and the workers.

Lordstown “is producing a world-class car in a world-class production facility,” he said

When asked about the GM recalls, Portman said the Senate is investigating to determine whether the problems were hidden from the public.

“If so, there needs to be not just accountability, but consequences. It can never happen again.”

The Cruze is not part of any GM recalls, but the Chevrolet Cobalt, which was produced at Lordstown, has been recalled because of ignition switch issues.
