The Central City Neighborhood Association will dedicate a pocket park to the city at 11 a.m. July 28 at Washington Street and Mercer Avenue.

A pocket park is a small park accessible to the public.

The park is in the Garden District north of downtown, so named by the nonprofit organization Gregg’s Gardens, which is working with other nonprofits to beautify and bring investment to the neighborhood.

Volunteers needed

Volunteers are being sought starting at 7:30 a.m. Saturday for a grass-mowing project on vacant lots around Dickey Community Garden and AmVets Park on the city’s West Side.

Volunteers will aid people from BS Land LLC, which is donating its time and equipment to clean up the area. Volunteers will collect trash ahead of the mowers, weed-whip and clean up.

Volunteers should bring gloves, bags, weed whips, brooms or just yourself. Meeting place is Dickey Community Garden at Dickey Avenue and Ward Street Northwest.

Youngstown native Erik Hendel, a teacher with the Peace Corps in a remote village in South Africa, is raising funds to build a day-care facility there.

Locally, Hendel’s parents, Dale Jr. and Colleen Hendel, and his sister, Sara Hendel McCormick, are helping by hosting a beer- and wine-tasting event from 7 to 11 p.m. July 26 at the Aut Mori Grotto Banquet Hall, 563 N. Belle Vista Ave. Tickets are $10 at the door. For information, call 330-770-9348.

Burglary probed

Township police are investigating a burglary after it was reported Wednesday that $500 worth of copper was removed from an abandoned house in the 4700 block of Lockwood Boulevard.

The house is owned by Altoris Bank and is under the management of Skyline Realty. An employee of the realty company went to check on the house and “discovered that all of the copper plumbing had been removed from the basement,” according to a police report.
