Military members honored at Scrappers game

Friday, July 18, 2014

At a recent Scrappers game, attendees remembered those that have served in the military. Staff from Shepherd of the Valley provided people with an opportunity to remember the active duty personnel and veterans in their lives by signing the person’s name and placing a silk red, white and blue mixed carnation in a heart display located on the concourse. Those attending the fireworks show at the Canfield fairgrounds on June 28 were also able to honor the military members.

“We had many positive responses. They were so pleased and grateful that an organization was taking the time to do something like this. Many of those participating proudly signed their own names and told the Shepherd staff stories of their time in the service. Others had smiles on their faces when they talked about how proud they were of a father, mother or grandparent who had served,” stated Kelly Stansloski, Shepherd of the Valley Associate Director (Poland).

“The most touching experiences,” Stansloski said, “were when younger children were given the name of someone in the family or a friend who had served and put the carnation on the board. The children were so proud to do this and it was rewarding to know that they just learned something important that is now being passed down to another generation.” The display will travel between the five Shepherd locations through the month of July, starting at the Poland site and ending at the corporate office in Austintown. Anyone wishing to add a carnation is welcome to stop in at one of the sites. There is no charge.
