June 16 was a busy first day for the Adventure Day Camp at Boardman Park, with 85 children participating the first day.
The camp runs from June 16 until Aug. 15 from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. each day with a variety of activities.
“We’ve done the camp since 2003,” camp director Karen McCallum said. “The park has always had a long tradition of the summer day camp. For years we didn’t have one. When they hired me on back in 2003, we established the summer day camp.”
Children who attended the camp were broken up into groups based on grade. The groups were kindergarten through sixth grade. Each group had 16-23 children. They did activities in categories of arts and crafts, team building, creative arts, science and sports.
“The camp is set up so that the kids can have education yet fun outside doing science, sports, arts and crafts, team building and creative arts,” McCallum said. “In science, we’re doing a veggie garden. They’ll be learning about the pond. In creative arts, they’re doing role playing and playing heads up. They’ll learn about photography. Team building is a great opportunity to learn about being a good leader as well as a good follower and using good communication skills. The kids are learning while having fun doing it. They’re outside, which is what they should be doing in the summer time.”
Natalia Novicky, of Austintown, attended the first day of the camp. She said she did so on the recommendation of her friend.
“My friend did it. She told me it was fun so I decided to go,” Novicky said. “It’s really fun because you’re outdoors and some kids don’t get to go outdoors so it’s really fun.”
Natalia was said that her favorite camp activity so far allowed her to be physically active.
“[I like] gym. You get to do activities and you do some fun things and it’s really fun,” she said.
