YSU’s Perry eyes overseas contract

After seeing limited action on the Orlando Magic’s summer league team, Youngstown State graduate Kendrick Perry expects to play overseas next season.

“At this point, it’s pretty much down to seeing what teams overseas are offering me contract-wise, then sitting down with my agent and my family and making the best decision I can,” Perry said.

Perry, a 6-foot guard, appeared in just one of the Magic’s five games in the Orlando summer league, scoring eight points (3-for-3 from the field, 2-for-2 from the line) with three rebounds, one turnover and five fouls in 14 minutes of the finale.

Perry, who lives about 15 minutes away from Orlando in Ocoee, Fla., was battling for playing time behind high draft picks such as Elfrid Payton and Victor Oladipo.

“It was a little different coming from Youngstown, where I played a lot of minutes, but nothing affected my attitude and my work ethic,” said Perry, YSU’s career leader in steals and Division I points. “I still learned a lot about the professional game and at the end of the day, it was still a great experience. It was a great opportunity and I’m thankful for it.”

Perry’s older brother, Aubrey, is a professional soccer player for BKV Norrt §lje, a Swedish team, but he said he doesn’t have any preference on where he goes next. Like the NBA, most leagues start play October, so he has time to make a decision.

“At this point, I’ll be thankful for whatever opportunity I get,” he said.
