City firefighters battled blazes at two vacant homes at about the same time Wednesday morning.

Crews were called to a 338 E. Myrtle Ave. home on the South Side about 1:40 a.m. and found the home totally consumed by flames that melted the siding on a home across the street, reports said. A car parked across the street in a field also received minor damage and power was knocked out to several homes on the block, reports said. Damage is listed at $6,680.

About 2 a.m., crews were called to a 1624 Hartzell Ave. home on the West Side, and that fire was also heavily involved when the first companies arrived. Damage there is listed at $14,400.

The cause for both fires is listed as arson. No one was injured in either blaze.
