Selig says Rose could play 2015 All-Star role

MINNEAPOLIS

Pete Rose may have a role to play in next year’s All-Star game in Cincinnati despite his lifetime ban from baseball.

The Reds host the 2015 All-Star game on July 14, and Commissioner Bud Selig left open the possibility Rose could play a part.

Rose agreed to the lifetime ban in August 1989 following an investigation by Major League Baseball that concluded he bet on the Reds to win while managing the team.

Wade re-signs with Heat for two years

Dwyane Wade is staying with the Miami Heat, and his latest deal is designed to give both the player and the only franchise he’s ever known some flexibility in the coming years. Wade signed a new contract with the Heat on Tuesday. It’s a two-year deal, the second of those seasons a player option, said a person familiar with the situation.

In other moves, the Chicago Bulls said goodbye to forward Carlos Boozer, using the amnesty clause to cut the veteran forward after four seasons with the team.

Also, the Houston Rockets acquired Trevor Ariza as part of a three-team trade also involving New Orleans and the Wizards. The Rockets will send center Omer Asik, forward Omri Casspi and cash to New Orleans, while Houston will also get forward Alonzo Gee, guard Scotty Hopson and a 2015 first-round draft pick from the Pelicans. Washington will receive center Melvin Ely and a trade exception.

Campbell grad Sikora nominated for honor

WAYNESBURG, PA.

Campbell graduate and Waynesburg University linebacker John Sikora has been nominated for the 2014 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team.

Allstate and the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) recognize a select group of college football players who have made a commitment to enriching the lives of others while contributing to the greater good of their communities.

Sikora’s resume of community service includes participating in Waynesburg University’s Day of Service at St. Ann’s Parish; taking part in the Greene County mission trip, and serving as a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.

From the 182 nominees, a final roster of 22 award recipients — 11 from the NCAA FBS and 11 from the NCAA FCS, Divisions II, III and the NAIA — will be unveiled in September.

Phantoms chosen for international event

YOUNGSTOWN

Incoming defenseman Ty Farmer and Phantoms affiliate list player Luke McInnis have been named to the U.S. Under-17 Select Team that will participate in the 2014 Under-17 Five Nations Tournament, Aug. 13-17 in Crimmitschau, Germany.

Farmer, who was tendered ahead of this year’s USHL Draft, comes to Youngstown after spending last season with the St. Louis Blues AAA U-16 program.Selected in the third round (38 overall) in Phase I of this year’s USHL Draft, McInnis, 15, split his time last season between Hingham (Mass.) High School and the Cape Cod Whalers U-16 program.

High school basketball officiating class set

Classes will begin Sept. 15 at Newton Falls High for those interested in becoming basketball offiicals. The fee is $95 which covers all required instruction materials. The course is limited to 24 students.

Pens’ Crosby decides against wrist surgery

PITTSBURGH

Penguins center Sidney Crosby has opted not to have surgery for a right wrist injury that hindered him during the playoffs.

Crosby, the reigning MVP and scoring leader of the NHL, had been mulling whether to have arthroscopic surgery. According to the Penguins, he instead will continue with treatments.

The team’s training camp opens in about two months.
