A Brittain Street woman, who said she was bitten and severely injured by an unsecured dog at the Mahoning County dog pound, and her husband have sued the county and five unidentified defendants for more than $25,000. The suit, which alleges the county was negligent, was filed by Robin D. Ritchie and her husband, Rocky, in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court and assigned to Judge John M. Durkin.

In the lawsuit, Robin Ritchie said she was at the pound, 589 Industrial Road, to adopt a dog July 29, 2013, “when she was viciously attacked and bitten by defendant’s dog.” Gina Bricker, an assistant county prosecutor, said she did not know the specific circumstances of this case but that she’ll defend the county against this lawsuit on the basis of sovereign (governmental) immunity from such suits.

Paving contract

The Mill Creek MetroParks Board of Commissioners has awarded a $229,922 contract to Shelly Co. of Thornville, Ohio, the lowest of six bidders, to pave 1.3 miles of West Golf Drive between Shields Road and the Mill Creek Park Golf Course field house. That section of the drive will be closed during the three-week job that likely will begin in September, Steve Avery, park planning director and landscape architect, told the board Monday.

The Ohio Department of Transportation is paying $114,000 toward the project, and the park district is paying the remainder, he said.

Food distribution

Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley’s mobile food pantry will have a food distribution for disabled military veterans and low-income families from 10 a.m. to noon Thursday at the Austintown Senior Center, 100 Westchester Drive.
