Girard’s Sarra finishes in 15th place at WSOP

Girard’s Thomas Sarra Jr. finished 15th at Monday’s World Series of Poker No-Limit Hold ’Em Main Event at The Rio.

Sarra was ousted just before midnight. He earned $441,940. Sarra had been in ninth place before he was eliminated and had been as high as fourth during Monday’s competition.

The top nine are guaranteed $730,000 and advance to the finals in Las Vegas on Nov. 10-11. They will play for the grand prize of $10 million.

The field started with 6,683 players.

Penguins get 2 games on league TV package

YOUNGSTOWN

The Youngstown State football team will have road games at South Dakota State (Oct. 25) and Illinois State (Nov. 8) televised as part of the Missouri Valley Football Conference’s television package.

The Penguins’ contest at South Dakota State is set for a 3 p.m. Eastern start while the tilt at Illinois State will begin at 2 p.m. The local stations which will show the games will be announced in the future as well as a YSU watch party location for fans to gather and view the games in one area location.

The Penguins’ entire 12-game regular-season slate will be carried on NewsRadio 570 AM in Youngstown.

Local golfers dominate division at youth event

The boys 13-15 division of Monday’s Northern Ohio PGA Junior Golf event at Barberton Brookside Country Club turned into a Mahoning Valley competition. Cole Christman of Canfield won the division with a 1-over par score of 73. Ken Keller of Boardman and Jared Wilson of Columbiana tied for second at 74, Cade Kreps of Youngstown shot 77 and Zachary Jacobson of Poland shot 79.

Christina Cooper of Canfield finished fourth in the girls 16-19 division with a 78. Jacob Harrah of Newton Falls shot 75 to finish tied for third in the boys 16-19 division. Eric Rohrabaugh of Cortland shot 76, Bradley Miller of Hanoverton shot 77 and Bruce William Wiggins of Columbiana had an 80.

Rain delays Creekside in Connie Mack event

Creekside Fitness held a 1-0 lead over Troy American Legion Post 43 after three innings of Monday’s Connie Mack tournament game at Cene Park.

The game is scheduled to resume today at 12:30 p.m.

Two YSU men’s golfers in action this week

Youngstown State golfer Bryan Yeo (Boardman) has qualified for the 2014 U.S. Open Amateur Championship while D.J. Holub (Twinsburg) opened play at the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championships in Newton, Kan., with a first-round 76, 10 strokes off the pace.

Yeo had a two-round score of 68-73—141 last week at the U.S. Amateur Open qualifier at the Brookside Country Club in Canton and finished second, just one stroke behind the winner.

Yeo advances to the U.S. Amateur Open which begins Aug. 11 at the Atlanta Athletic Club in Johns Creek, Ga. Holub is competing in the Publinks event for the second straight year.

Nibali excels at Tour as Contador crashes out

After just 10 stages, the two pre-race favorites have crashed out of the Tour de France. And Vincenzo Nibali is wasting little time in showing that he’s now the man to beat. On Monday, the Italian narrowly dodged a spill by Alberto Contador that left the two-time Tour champion with a fractured shin. Nibali went on to barrel past a panting breakaway rider to win a fog-and-rain coated, up-and-down Stage 10 and recover the yellow jersey that he had lost only a day earlier.

As the race enters its first rest day on Tuesday, Nibali — who has already won the Spanish Vuelta and Italian Giro — looks on his way to winning his first Tour with just under two weeks to go.
