Coroner rules two men drowned in Newton Township pond

WARREN

The Trumbull County coroner has ruled the weekend deaths of two men in a pond in Newton Township accidental by way of drowning.

Dr. Humphrey Germaniuk issued the rulings on Anthony Harris Sr., 48, and his son, Anthony Harris Jr., 21, both of Youngstown, after conducting autopsies Tuesday.

Based on evidence at the scene, investigators have said they believe the younger Harris may have gone into the water to save his father while they were fishing at Rankin’s Pond east of Newton Falls.

Germaniuk said it’s possible the men couldn’t swim, but it’s clear that the biggest problem was that they were not wearing life preservers.
