Attendance up at Trumbull County Fair

Attendance at the Trumbull County Fair was 3,000 more than last year, despite a couple of rainy days to start the week.

Attendance was approximately 149,000 for this year, compared with 146,000 in 2013.

Brenda Richman, financial secretary for the Trumbull County Fair Board, said they “were sweating” after rain the first two days of the fair held down attendance.

“Then we had a few really nice days,” she said.

On Sunday there was additional concern about the rain in the morning, but then it stopped and was nice the rest of the day, Richman said.

“There are a lot of people calling us to ask if it was raining,” she said. “I guess it was raining where they were, but we had a really clear day.”

Weather is a significant factor when it comes to fair attendance. There are a lot of people who — if it’s raining or looks like it might rain — won’t show up, Richman said.

The fair included its typical events including car races, demolition derby, 4-H events, musical performances, tractor pulls, rides, food and fireworks. The fair is designed to be a reminder of the agricultural history of Trumbull County.

It still will be some time before it is known how much money the fair made, Richman said.

“I know we’re not in the red,” she said. “We won’t know for sure [how much the fair made] until we get the water and electric bills.”

It will be about a month before all the details about this year’s fair are known, Richman said.

In about a week, efforts will begin for planning the 2015 fair, she said. The rest of this week will be spent making sure that everything from this year’s fair is completed.
