State survey passed
POLAND
Shepherd of the Valley – Poland passed its annual state survey with no deficiencies. Ohio has nearly 600 assisted-living communities that must meet 324 regulations to achieve a perfect survey. Each year, less than 50 percent achieve that goal, said Rebecca S. Maust, Division of Quality Assurance chief and state survey (inspection) director for the Ohio Department of Health.
Assisted-living providers offer services to residents who require some assistance, but do not need the level of care provided by a nursing home. The ODH licenses these providers and conducts at least one unannounced survey during a nine- to 15-month inspection cycle.

The Ohio Academy of Family Physicians is accepting nominations from the public through April 4 for its 2014 Family Physician of the Year honor.

Nominees must be a member of OAFP in practice and have at least 10 years of post-residency experience. They must also be an outstanding family physician role model, possess high professional standards and service orientation, provide high quality, family-centered, continuing health care, and be active in the community, education or other public affairs. Cancer awareness
January is National Pancreatic Cancer Clinical Trials Awareness Month. Information about National Pancreatic Cancer Clinical Trials Awareness Month is available at www.pancan.org/clinicaltrials.
The Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, raising awareness about the critical role clinical trials play in making scientific progress, especially for a disease like pancreatic cancer that has few effective treatment options, recommends that pancreatic cancer patients consider clinical trials when exploring treatment options.
Guest speaker

Rashelle Duko of ExactCare Pharmacy is guest speaker at the Greater East Ohio Area Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association meeting at 2 p.m. Feb. 17 at Aontonie Sisters Adult Day Center, 2675 N. Lipkey Road.
Duko’s topic is “Medication Safety and Services Available.” The program is free and open to the community.
Alzheimer’s program

The Alzheimer’s Association’s Greater East Ohio Area Chapter is offering the “Reducing Disabilities in Alzheimer’s Disease,” or RDAD, program beginning Feb. 18 at Copeland Oaks Retirement Community, 800 S. 15th St.
The RDAD Group program is an interactive program for individuals living with memory loss and their caregivers. The chapter has joined with the Ohio Department of Aging and the Benjamin Rose Institute on Aging in implementing the program.
