Hornberger, Hirsch win Horizon honors

Youngstown State senior Liz Hornberger has been named the Horizon League women’s basketball player of the week, and freshman teammate Jenna Hirsch is the league’s freshman of the week.
The pair helped the Penguins to their first win over Green Bay in nine years on Thursday, and YSU remained the Horizon League’s only unbeaten team in conference play with a win over Milwaukee on Saturday.
Hornberger, from Reading, Pa., was 10-for-20 from the field and 8-for-17 from 3-point range while playing all but two minutes during the week. Hirsch, from Marlette, Mich., had averages of 14 points, 5.5 assists and 4.5 rebounds in the two victories.
Phantoms’ Parran is USHL defender of week

Phantoms defenseman Tommy Parran has been named the USHL defenseman of the week. Parran, 18, earns the award on the heels of a three-goal weekend that saw him record his first career USHL goal, his first career USHL two-goal game, and his first career USHL shorthanded goal. Parran scored two goals against Waterloo Friday, and added a third while shorthanded against Muskegon on Saturday.
Li Na returns to Australian semifinals
MELBOURNE, Australia
Two-time finalist Li Na stayed in contention for another Australian Open title match after beating Flavia Pennetta 6-2, 6-2 today to advance to the semifinals at Melbourne Park. Li, who lost to Victoria Azarenka in the 2013 final and to Kim Clijsters in 2011, will next play the winner of today’s later quarterfinal between Ana Ivanovic of Serbia and Eugenie Bouchard of Canada.
Azarenka, who is attempting to win her third consecutive title here, plays her quarterfinal match against Agnieszka Radwanska on Wednesday. Simona Halep will play Dominika Cibulkova in another quarterfinal on the same day.
The men’s quarterfinals pit No. 3 David Ferrer against No. 7 Tomas Berdych and Novak Djokovic, continuing his quest for a fourth consecutive Australian Open title, against No. 8 Stanislas Wawrinka on one half of the draw. The other half has top-ranked Rafael Nadal vs. Grigor Dimitrov and Wimbledon champion Andy Murray vs. 17-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer.
Family Fun Day part of hoops doubleheader

The Youngstown State University athletic department will host the sixth annual Family Fun Day, presented by Meridian Community Care, from 2 to 4:30 p.m. Saturday in the Stambaugh Stadium Gym. The event precedes the YSU women’s and men’s basketball doubleheader at the Beeghly Center.
Meridian Community Care Family Fun Day is free and open to children and adults of all ages. Activities will include bounce-a-round games, inflatables, basketball and other skill games, clowns, face painting, Pete & Penny and free ticket and promotional giveaways.
In addition, YSU will host its annual rummage sale at Beeghly Center prior to (beginning at 3:30 p.m.) and during the two basketball games. Fans will be able to buy game-worn uniforms, warm-ups and other Penguin gear including football jerseys, basketball uniforms, baseball uniforms and other YSU memorabilia.
Food bank to benefit from Phantoms’ game

The Youngstown Phantoms, in partnership with local NBC affiliate WFMJ, will hold Second Harvest Food Bank Night on Friday when the team plays host to Team USA beginning at 7:05 p.m.
All guests who bring three non-perishable food items to the Covelli Centre for donation will receive a $3 Purple Level ticket, which carries a face value of $12.
All donations will benefit the Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley, which solicits, stores, and distributes food to hunger-relief organizations in Columbiana, Mahoning, and Trumbull Counties. For more information, contact the Phantoms at 330-747-PUCK (7825).
