Warren man dies in Friday afternoon fire

WARREN — A 69-year-old man who smoked cigarettes and used oxygen died today at a 1:30 p.m. house fire at 2309 Oak St. SW.

Fire Chief Ken Nussle said the victim’s daughter-in-law heard a “pop,” then walked into a front room and found the man on the couch, engulfed in flames.

The man, identified by the Warren Fire Department as Tim Cooper, was dead at the scene. The State Fire Marshal’s Office is assisting with the investigation, which is not complete.

The Youngstown Bomb Squad was called to assist after finding a grenade and live .50-caliber ammunition in the house. The ammunition was found to be live, but the grenade was not.

The home suffered heavy fire and smoke damage to the kitchen and living room with smoke and water damage throughout.

The American Red Cross was contacted to assist the home’s other residents. No smoke detectors were found in the home, which is owned by Matthew and Sandra Cooper.

The department listed damage to the house at $17,000 and $5,000 to its contents.
