On Feb. 4, Poland Dobbins Elementary had a big day at the Math 24 competition at Youngstown State’s Kilcawley Chestnut room.

The team, consisting of nine fourth-grade students – Wyatt Bobbey, Gabriella Calderon, George Corfias, Julia Eich, Joey Iberis, Katie Jacobson, Connor Maze, Ethan McKenzie and Julia Ranno – dominated the competition. Out of 16 students advancing to regionals to represent Mahoning County, eight of them will be from Dobbins.

In the Math 24 competition, teams compete in four rounds that last 10-20 minutes. Players are seated three or four to a table, and points from rounds one and two are added up to determine who advances to the semifinals. The semifinal and final rounds are face-off rounds, with the top scoring student at each table competing against each other.

The students have been meeting after school from 2:30-3:30 p.m. to practice for this event. Elaine Morlan has the practices for students who also practice at home to up their skills.

“Students work hard to use their knowledge of math facts to solve these leveled 24 cards.” she said. “It is exciting to watch them advance in skill and enthusiasm as their successes increase.”

Morlan prepares Dobbins fourth graders for the Math 24 challenge annually.

The team has been in existence for more than 20 years and two years ago had two students place in the top four at regionals.
