Tickets for Friday’s girls basketball Division I district final between Canfield and North Canton Hoover are on sale all week at the Canfield High School athletic office.

Student tickets cost $4 and adult tickets cost $6. The game is at Walsh University and is set for a 7 p.m. start.

YSU sets school marks in relays at league meet

The Youngstown State swimming and diving team opened the Horizon League Championships Wednesday by setting school records in two relay events at the Busby Natatorium.

YSU swam a time of 1:35.64 in the 200-yard freestyle, which was .02 ahead of the school mark set previously in 2012. Then the Penguins finished fifth in 200-yard medley relay posting a time of 1:43.80, which eclipsed their 1:44.53 that was also set in 2012.

The Penguins are in a tie with Wright State for sixth in the team standings with 55 points. Preliminaries will be held tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. with finals set to go off at 5:30 p.m.

Alabama St. scores final 5 runs to top YSU

Alabama State scored the final five runs after the Youngstown State baseball team tied the game in an 8-3 victory over the Penguins on a chilly Wednesday evening at the Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex.

Kevin Hix and Mike Accardi both had two hits for the Penguins, who rallied to tie the score at 3-3 after four innings. The Hornets scored three runs in the sixth and added two runs in the seventh.

YSU starter Ryan Krokos allowed three runs in the second inning, and five relievers combined to throw the final six innings.

YSU will travel to Cary, N.C. to play three games at the USA Baseball-Irish Classic this weekend. The Penguins will play Appalachian State on Friday, Notre Dame on Saturday and North Carolina State on Sunday.

Steelers to play Poland All-Stars in hoops

Members of the Pittsburgh Steelers will be in town next month to take on the Poland All-Stars in a basketball game, Thursday, March 20, at Poland High School Fieldhouse.

Tickets to the event are available in advance for $7 and can be purchased at Poland Union Elementary School during school hours.

The game will begin at 8 p.m. and the doors will open an hour before tip-off. If tickets still remain, they can be purchased at the box office prior to the start.

Sanchez leads Pirates rally over Yankees

Jacoby Ellsbury reached base in all three plate appearances of his New York Yankees’ spring training debut, scoring twice Wednesday in 6-5 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Ellsbury, who left World Series champion Boston for a $153 million, seven-year contract with New York, walked twice and had an infield single in the exhibition opener. He was on base in the second inning when Yangervis Solarte hit a two-run homer off Edinson Volquez.

Pittsburgh trailed 4-0 but scored twice in the second and four times in the seventh, when Tony Sanchez hit a tying three-run homer against Chase Whitley. Chris McGuiness had a go-ahead single that drove in former-Yankee Chris Dickerson.

Yankees starter Ivan Nova allowed two runs, two hits and two walks in 1 1-3 innings. Pirates starter Francisco Liriano gave two runs, three hits and a walk in one inning.
