YSU baseball falls 11-2 to Alabama State

MONTGOMERY, ALA.

Alabama State scored six runs in the first two innings as the Hornets beat the Youngstown State baseball team , 11-2, Tuesday at the Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex.

Mike Accardi (Sr., Milford, Pa.) had a team-high two hits, and Alex Larivee (Fr., Sacramento, Calif.) tripled and scored in the ninth for the Penguins. YSU’s other run came when David Saluga (Sr., Hermitage, Pa.) scored on Shane Willoughby’s (Fr., Lawrence, Kan.) bases-loaded walk with two outs in the ninth inning.

Junior Austin Lujano (Reno, Nev.) allowed five runs on six hits in 12/3 innings in his first career start. Robert Switka (Sr., Ursuline) and Ryan Smith (Fr., Hubbard) also pitched for YSU.

Mooney’s Reese named preseason All-American

WOOSTER

Cardinal Mooney graduate Eddie Reese was named to the 2014 D3baseball.com preseason All-America baseball team. The second baseman for the College of Wooster is one of 16 seniors on the squad which is looking for its third straight trip to regional play.

Reese last year was the Fighting Scots’ top offensive player in his first season as a starter, leading the squad in average (.369), runs scored (37), doubles (11), and RBI (34).

Memorial scratch bowling event April 13

NEW CASTLE, PA.

The 13th annual Michael “Mickey” Michalojko Memorial Scratch Bowling Tournament is April 13 at Colonial Lanes in New Castle. The tournament matches some of the best bowlers in the area competing for a guaranteed first prize of $2,200. Michalojko was the longtime owner of Colonial Lanes and Shanango Bowl-A-Way.

Proceeds from the event go toward the scholarship fund in Michalojko’s name and the money goes to area junior bowlers in the form of scholarships.

Anyone interested in competing should call Colonial Lanes at 724-654-5000 or stop in for an entry form. Entry fee is $65 in advance and $80 the day of the event. The public is welcome to attend the tournament.

Buckeye stars appear at Eastwood Mall store

Former Ohio State football players are scheduled to appear at the Everything Buckeyes store in the Eastwood Mall in March.

Scheduled to appear March 8 from noon to 2 p.m. are Ryan Shazier, Bradley Roby and Jack Mewhort. Super tickets for that day are $40 and individuals are $20 for Shazier, $15 for Roby and $10 for Mewhort.

Those scheduled for 6 to 8 p.m. on March 15 are Carlos Hyde, Boardman’s Corey Linsley and Kenny Guiton. Super tickets are $50 and individual tickets are $35 for Hyde and $10 each for Linsley and Guiton.

Belmonte successfully defends USBC Masters

NORTH BRUNSWICK, N.J.

Australia’s Jason Belmonte on Sunday became the first bowler in nearly 50 years to successfully defend the U.S. Bowling Congress Masters title. He beat EJ Tackett of Huntington, Ind., 221-177 in the final. Belmonte is the third player to successfully defend a Masters title, joining Dick Hoover (1956-57) and Billy Welu (1964-65). Belmonte, who won his ninth PBA title and third major, is the reigning Professional Bowlers Association Player of the Year and also became the seventh player to win consecutive majors. He won the PBA Tournament of Champions in January.
