Penguins sweep Horizon softball honors

Youngstown State sophomore Miranda Castiglione (Brampton, Ontario) was named the Horizon League softball Player of the Week, while senior Casey Crozier (Valparaiso, Ind.) earned Pitcher of the Week honors.

Castiglione, an infielder, collected hits in each of the four contests to earn Tiger Classic All-Tournament Team honors. She posted a .667 batting average (10-for-15) with an on-base percentage of .667, and a .933 slugging percentage.

Crozier became Youngstown State’s all-time strikeout leader at the Tiger Classic while leading the Penguins to two wins. She recorded a career-high 11 strikeouts against Tennessee State and posted her 11th career shutout. Against Western Michigan, she fanned 10 and picked up her 44th career victory, which is tied for second all-time.

Youngstown State assistant football coach Jamie Bryant spent nine years at Vanderbilt. A story in Saturday’s newspaper reported the wrong school. Bryant was YSU’s special teams coach last season and is expected to be named the team’s defensive coordinator.

Senior Casey Crozier struck out 10 and sophomore Miranda Castiglione tied a school record with four hits to lead the Youngstown State softball team to a 5-1 win over Western Michigan on Sunday. With the win, the Penguins improve to 4-4, and Crozier and Castiglione were both named to the Tiger Classic All-Tournament Team.

Springfield has girls district semi tickets

Springfield girls basketball — tickets are available during school hours for the Tigers’ Division III district semifinal against Ursuline scheduled Thursday at 6 p.m. at Struthers Fieldhouse. Tickets are $6 for adults and $4 for students.

Lady Cardinals softball offers clinic March 15

Canfield Lady Cardinals softball players and coaches will present a Skills & Drills Tuneup Softbal Clinic March 15 at the high school gym.

Ages 7-10 will meet from 10 a.m. to noon and ages 11-14 will meet from 1 to 3 p.m. Cost is $25 per player. Registration will take place 30 minutes prior to the start of each session. Ohio Girls Golf has clinics at Pine Lakes

The Ohio Girls Golf Foundation (OGGF) will hold golf clinics for beginning to advanced female golfers aged 8-18. The clinics, taught by LPGA and PGA instructors, will be available at Pine Lakes Golf Club in Hubbard from 10 to 11 a.m. each Saturday in April. Austintown wrestlers at middle school state

AUSTINTOWN

Austintown Middle School’s wrestling team has six wrestlers who have qualified for the OAC State Wrestling Tournament which will be held March 7-8 at the Covelli Centre.

The six Falcons who have reached the state meet are Andrew Steheura (134 pounds), Willie Beverly (146), Mike Ferree (154), Brock Kimble (209), Tyler Petrey (294) and Donrico Stautmire (174) as an alternate.
