YSU set to add Zordich, Carter to coaching staff

A familiar face is reportedly joining Eric Wolford’s staff at Youngstown State.

Former NFL safety Mike Zordich, a Chaney High graduate, will serve as the Penguins’ safeties coach, according to Coachingsearch.com.

Zordich coached safeties for the Philadelphia Eagles in 2011-12 and was the team’s defensive quality control coach in 2010. Zordich was an assistant coach at Cardinal Mooney from 2003-08, where he coached his sons, Michael and Alex.

He will replace Joe Tresey, who coached safeties the last two years in addition to serving as defensive coordinator. Tresey’s contract will not be removed. Special teams coach Jamie Bryant is expected to replace Tresey as defensive coordinator.

Zordich did not respond to a request for comment. YSU has not announced the hiring.

YSU is also expected to add Louisville’s Kenny Carter as an assistant, according to WFMJ. He has been the Cardinals’ running backs coach and special teams coordinator the past four seasons. He has also coached at LSU, Pitt, Penn State, Vanderbilt and Florida.
