Event highlights free tax-filing offers for Pa. residents

Staff report

SHARON, PA.

U.S. Rep. Mike Kelly, R-3rd of Butler. Pa.; Chris Long of the Computer and Communications Industry Association and Anthony Bedell of Intuit Financial Freedom Foundation will highlight offers for free filing at tax time for Pennsylvania residents and provide a free file- product demonstration.

The event will take place Monday in Sharon Hall Room 314 on the Penn State Shenango campus, 147 Shenango Ave. The event will include an 11 a.m. public briefing with Kelly in Sharon and a free tax-filing workshop at 11:30.

The Free File program is a partnership between the IRS and brand-name tax software companies that provides eligible taxpayers free use of their tax software products. Eligible Pennsylvania residents can file both their federal and state returns for free because Pennsylvania has entered into the same partnership with several of these tax software companies.

In general, individuals and families with an adjusted gross income of $58,000 or less can use Free File, which not only saves on the cost of tax preparation, but also helps taxpayers keep as much of their refund as possible.

After the briefing, local community groups and interested individuals will be able to experience one of the Free File products to demonstrate how easily one can file.
