Champion boys win D-II district

Staff report

AKRON

Champion and Struthers flip-flopped positions in the boys competition and the Cardinal Mooney girls snuck past two other local teams on Saturday in the Division II District bowling meet at Riviera Lanes in Akron.

Champion won the district title, besting Struthers 3,846-3,789. The Wildcats had captured the sectional crown last week, topping the Golden Flashes.

The top four teams in the district qualify for the state meet Friday and Saturday at Wayne Webb’s Columbus Bowl.

On the girls’ side, Mooney grabbed the fourth and final qualifying spot, beating Hubbard by 41 pins and Struthers by 76.

The top four individuals not on a qualifying team also advance to state. Local girls advancing are Kesia Hilbon of Struthers, Breanna Burk of McDonald and Miranda Romano of Hubbard.

Mark McCloskey of Maplewood, whose team missed a state berth by 10 pins, qualified as an individual.

Struthers and Champion are familiar with playing in the boys state tournament. This is the third straight state berth for the Flashes and Struthers has made six trips to state.

This season is the first in which the Ohio High School Athletic Association divided the schools into two divisions.

Members of the Cardinal Mooney girls team are Clara Angeloff, Christian Dama, Courtney Unger, Adrianna Popovich and Marianna Pikonas.

Struthers’ boys team includes Dan Diloreto, Adam Cifra, Andrew Brabant, Jay King, Dan Demyan and Johnny Medvec.

The Champion team includes Zach Zigmont, David Yenchocic, Justin Cox, Danny Simmons and Jared Gould.
