Students at Ursuline Preschool and Kindergarten did not let the freezing temperatures ruin their celebration of their school’s 50th anniversary and Catholic Schools week. The students were scheduled to celebrate the joint milestones during the week of Jan. 27, but due to inclement weather and school cancellations, several festivities had to be postponed, including We All Scream for Ice Cream Day.

The students were able to start the week’s original celebration schedule with Hats Off to UPSK Day, during which students were to wear their favorite hat. The students also received Ursuline Preschool 50th Anniversary pencils. The students were also able to close the original schedule of events on the last day of the week by receiving a copy of the school’s Alma Mater with gold beads attached.

The We All Scream for Ice Cream Days were able to be rescheduled for Feb. 3-4, much to the delight of the children. All students enjoyed an ice cream sundae with all the toppings, including whipped cream, Oreos, M&M’s and, of course, cherries. Feb. 4 was also deemed Spirit Day, with the children welcoming the Ursuline High School cheerleaders and dressing in the school’s colors of navy blue and gold. The students were also presented navy and gold pompoms to help them give three cheers to UPSK.

Materials for the week, including the pompoms, pencils, beads and an ice cream treat, were provided by Ursuline Preschool and Kindergarten Director Sister Charlotte Italiano.

“I was awarded the Golden Apple Award and was able to use those funds to provide the ice cream treat, pencils, pompoms and beads for the children for our celebration of our 50th anniversary and Catholic Schools week. It is a golden year, so I used the Golden Apple Fund,” Italiano said.
