Because students did not have classes on Valentine’s Day, the holiday came one day early for students at North Elementary School.
The 178 students in grades kindergarten through fourth had their Valentine’s Day parties on Thursday, Feb. 13, with two classes in each grade going to the school’s art and science room for ice cream with sprinkles and, of course, Hershey’s chocolate syrup.
“It’s a Valentine’s treat today,” said PTO volunteer Susan Clutter.
“Because there’s no school tomorrow, we thought we’d celebrate Valentine’s Day a little bit early,” she continued. “All of the kids gave each other a card, and then they came here to the art room for a “build your own sundae” party. We’ve pre-scooped the ice cream. Basically, they’re allowed to have sweets today to celebrate the holiday.”
The students entered the room one class at a time.
The PTO volunteers had the ice cream ready for them, and each student was able to either add sprinkles and chocolate syrup or eat their ice cream plain.
The children were sent back to their classes right after getting their ice cream dishes just right, leaving sprinkles scattered on the tables.
“We had a little treat for them earlier and now they’re having another treat,” said PTO President Amy O’Hara.
“They’re getting the ice cream and the sundaes and all the sprinkles,” she continued. “All of the parents donated the sprinkles and the chocolate syrup so they get to make their own. Then they can go back to their classes and have their Valentine’s Day parties with their classmates.”
