st. DAVID’S SOCIETY Background and more

St. David’s Society of Youngstown was founded in 1860 when a group of Welsh Americans who came to America to work in the steel and tin mills, formed an organization to preserve Welsh customs, language and musical traditions. The organization is named for the patron saint of Wales.

Banquet: St. David’s Day banquet will take place March 1 at the Saxon Club, 710 S. Meridian Road, Youngstown. Social time begins at 2 p.m. with buffet dinner at 2:30. Musical entertainment will be provided by Jennifer Jones Mosher, vocalist. Cost is $19.50, and pre-paid reservations must be made by Saturday. Make checks payable to St. David’s Society and send to Rhea Crelin, banquet coordinator, 3912 Hopkins Road, Youngstown, OH 44511. Call 330-792-2000. The banquet takes place on the Saturday closest to March 1, which is St. David’s Day. He is the patron saint of Wales.

Picnic: The society also sponsors an annual picnic that will be Aug. 23 at Stacey Pavilion in Austintown Park.
