Girard will be well-represented at the Division III district wrestling tournament next weekend at Garfield Heights thanks to an impressive showing on Saturday from the Indians’ senior class.

Three seniors earned first-place finishes in their weight class — Ed Sigurani (138 pounds), James Cupan (160), Nick Cardiero (170) — while freshman Dakota McCloskey won at 106 for the Indians.

Cardiero didn’t have to wrestle on the first day of the tournament advancing with two byes, but he made quick work of both his opponents on Saturday. He defeated Liberty’s Logan Weinreber by technical fall, 17-1, and then pinned Rootstown’s Dillon Wingard in 1:22.

The Indians had 12 wrestlers finish in the top four to advance to district.

Devin Seka won Jackson-Milton’s only championship in the 126-pound weight class, but the Bluejays had four wrestlers earn second-place finishes.

Liberty won three third-place matches thanks to Morgan Weinreber (126 pounds), Daryl McLendon (160) and Danaryll Green (220).

The other area schools who will have representatives at the district tournament in Garfield are Crestview with three, South Range with two, Columbiana with two, Wellsville with one and United with one.
