Boardman girls place in 4 events at WATTS

YOUNGSTOWN

The Boardman girls indoor track team placed in four events at the YSU indoor meet at the WATTS center held Saturday.

Junior Jordan Grantonic placed second in the 3200, running 11:40.05. The 4-x-800 meter relay team of Grantonic, seniors Trista Cunningham and Brandi Gatte, and junior Regan O’Hara ran 10:37.46 and finished in second place.

Senior Morgan Hambrick was third in the high jump with a jump of 5-feet and junior Brittany Chamberlain vaulted 7-feet to finish in seventh place in the pole vault.

YSU’s WATTS director at Curbstone luncheon

Tim Stuart, director of Youngstown State University’s Watson and Tressel Training Site (WATTS) and coordinator of all activities within the facility, will be the guest speaker of the Curbstone Coaches on Monday at noon at Luciano’s Banquet Center. The public is welcome.

Golfer Hal Sutton has mild heart attack

NAPLES, Fla.

Champions Tour player Hal Sutton had a mild heart attack after withdrawing during the first round of the ACE Group Classic.

“I had blockage in my heart, so yeah it was a heart attack,” Sutton told the Naples Daily News. “They put a stent in and I’m fine now.”

The 55-year-old Sutton withdrew Friday after playing the first eight holes in 5 over.

“I just said, ‘Something’s wrong. I don’t know what it is,”’ Sutton told the Daily News.

The 1983 PGA Championship winner won 14 times on the PGA Tour. He captained the 2004 U.S. Ryder Cup team.

Sam gets ovation at basketball game

COLUMBIA, Mo.

Michael Sam received a standing ovation when he appeared on the arena video boards during Missouri’s basketball game against Tennessee on Saturday. The All-America defensive end who could became the first openly gay player in the NFL, later blew a kiss to the student section and shook hands with fans.

Sam and the football team were honored at halftime for their Cotton Bowl win over Oklahoma State.

Lavillenie breaks world pole vault record

DONETSK, Ukraine

With Sergei Bubka in the crowd, there was perfect symmetry as Renaud Lavillenie broke Bubka’s indoor pole vault world record in the same Ukrainian city of Donetsk more than 20 years later. It felt like fate unfolding, as Bubka revealed he spoke to Lavillenie about his record the night before.

With Bubka cheering from the stands in Donetsk on Saturday, Lavillenie cleared the bar comfortably at 6.16 meters (20 feet, 2 1/2 inches) in Bubka’s home city, almost to the day the pole vault great cleared achieved 6.15 (20-2) on Feb. 21, 1993.
