Perry, Schlegel lead Horizon scholar-athletes

YOUNGSTOWN

Youngstown State basketball players Kendrick Perry and Heidi Schlegel have been named the Horizon League’s Scholar-Athletes of the Month for January.

Perry led the Penguins in January averaging 18.7 points per game over seven games with a high of 31 points in a victory against Cleveland State. He carries a 3.46 GPA as a criminal justice major and earlier this year he was voted Capital One Academic all-District.

Schlegel averaged 19.6 points and 8.8 rebounds in seven games including four 20-plus point performances. Schlegel, the League’s Scholar-Athlete of the Month in December, is a middle childhood education major and carries a 3.74 overall GPA.

Phantoms fall, 5-2, as road trip begins

MUSKEGON, MICH.

The Muskegon Lumberjacks scored four first-period goals in Friday’s 5-2 victory over the Youngstown Phantoms.

JJ Piccinich and Kiefer Sherwood scored third-period goals for the Phantoms. Sean Romeo made 11 saves in the first period, then was replaced by Colin DeAugustine who made 16 saves.

The Phantoms play tonight in Des Moines, Iowa, against the Buccaneers.

YSU baseball’s season start is delayed a week

CHARLOTTE, N.C.

The Youngstown State baseball team will have to wait another week to start its 2014 season after having its opening four-game series cancelled due to a snowstorm in the southeast.

The Penguins were scheduled to play a four-game series in Charlotte. starting Friday. As a result of this weekend’s cancellations, YSU has added two games to its schedule: at Penn State on April 1 at 6:30 p.m., and at home against Toledo on May 13.

The new target for the season opener is Feb. 21 at UAB.

Ex-NFL star Sharper charged in rape cases

LOS ANGELES

Prosecutors charged former NFL safety Darren Sharper on Friday with raping and drugging two women in California and disclosed he is under investigation in connection with five more drug-related rapes in three other states.

Sharper briefly appeared in Los Angeles Superior Court, where his arraignment was postponed until Thursday at the request of his lawyers. They issued a statement saying he would be exonerated.

Prosecutors then filed a motion to increase Sharper’s bail to $10 million and outlined details of investigations involving him in Las Vegas, Tempe, Ariz., and New Orleans. Sharper has not been charged in the other jurisdictions.

Former manager, All-Star Fregosi dies at 71

ATLANTA

Jim Fregosi, a six-time All-Star shortstop for the California Angels who managed that franchise to its first playoff appearance and guided the rowdy 1993 Philadelphia Phillies into the World Series, died Friday after an apparent stroke. He was 71.

Fregosi ended more than 50 years in baseball as a special assistant to Braves general manager Frank Wren.

Along with the Phillies and Angels, Fregosi managed the Chicago White Sox and Toronto.

Fregosi was an infielder in the majors from 1961 to 1978, hitting .265 with 151 homers and 706 RBIs. His best seasons came with the Angels, who retired his No. 11 in 1988.
