Design work begins for water project

Bill Coleman, office manager for the Mahoning County Sanitary Engineer’s Office, told the commissioners Thursday that engineering design work is underway and the county is seeking financing to provide public water-supply and sanitary- sewer service to the southwestern shore area along Lake Milton, with installation planned for 2016.

The water-supply project is estimated to cost $2.9 million, and the sewer project $4.3 million.

Funding for the projects will be sought from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and possibly from federal Community Development Block Grant money and Ohio Public Works Commission and U.S. and Ohio Environmental Protection Agency funds.

Dog, two cats left in abandoned home

Boardman police investigated a cruelty-to-animals call Tuesday after someone noticed a dog and two cats left in an abandoned house at 111 Beachwood Drive.

A police report describes “deplorable living conditions.” There was an overwhelming smell of cat urine and fecal matter. A television and the heat were on. There were several items and garbage bags strewn throughout the house, the report says.

The Mahoning County Humane Society was called to take the animals. Referrals were made to health and zoning departments.

Ex-store employee charged with theft

A former employee of a Dollar General store here is charged with felony theft after the store accused him of stealing more than $10,000.

Shane Yesovich, 36, of Boardman is charged with fourth-degree felony theft. Yesovich posted a $4,000 bond after he was booked by Boardman police Wednesday.

A representative of the store, on Boardman-Canfield Road, told police Yesovich took several deposits totaling $10,989.55. Yesovich told police five deposits were still in his car. The deposits totaled $1,188.28. They were returned to the store.

Woman faces OVI, possession charges

Police charged a 22-year-old woman with abusing harmful intoxicants after she admitted “huffing” while driving.

Megan Ortenzio of Applewood Boulevard also was given a citation for possession of drugs and cited for failure to control and operating a vehicle while impaired.

Police reported to a one-car accident on Southern Boulevard just after 5 p.m. Wednesday. The car went off the road and into a ditch. Ortenzio told police she was southbound on Southern when she lost consciousness and wrecked the car.

She said, “To be honest, officer, I was huffing a duster can,” according to the report.
