Canfield High School senior Megan Factor immediately knew she wanted her National Honor Society service project to benefit girls her age. With her love of fashion in mind, she organized a formal dress drive to help girls be able to afford a dress for a special occasion.

Factor partnered with Kristin Bodendorfer at DIVA Donations, a dress lending organization in North Lima, and collected the dresses at Canfield United Methodist Church Feb. 3-6.

“I have been fortunate enough to be able to afford dresses for special occasions and I know there are girls in our community who don’t have that privilege. I wanted to help provide a Cinderella experience for everyone to be able to go to a dance and didn’t necessarily have the funds to go,” Factor said.

DIVA, which stands for divinely inspired virtuously acquired, Donations is a formal clothing closet that serves Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties and surrounding areas, including Pennsylvania.

Factor also collected shoes, purses and accessories to be donated to DIVA Donations.

“Fashion is a big part of my life. Knowing I would be a part of National Honor Society since I was a freshman, I knew I wanted my service project to make a difference in the lives of girls and help make them feel their best. I believe that looking great for a formal occasion is important to girls my age and makes them feel good about themselves. Helping girls who are unable to purchase a formal dress of their own is something I have wanted to do for a long time,” Factor said.

Factor said donations were coming in from Austintown, Mineral Ridge and Canfield. She said girls were even bringing dresses to her at school.

“Thank you to everyone who donated. This has gone above and beyond what I thought I was capable of doing. I am grateful to everyone who helped. And thank you to the Canfield United Methodist Church for giving me a space to collect the dresses here. Everyone has been great and very accommodating,” Factor said.
