Canfield wrestlers capture EOWL and AAC championships

The Canfield High School wrestling team secured the EOWL and AAC regular season team dual championships with victories over Howland and Boardman. The Cards traveled to Howland and won with a score of 58-14. Canfield hosted the Spartans and won with a score of 57-16. The two victories gave Canfield a perfect 4-0 record in both the AAC and EOWL big school divisions.

Despite missing several starters due to injury and illness the Cardinals defeated Howland.

The Cards used forfeit wins by Shawn Frisbie and Kyle West, a pin by Korey Frost and a Georgio Poullas major decision to take a 22-0 lead. Braxton Madison stuck his opponent at 138, followed by a 17-2 tech fall victory by CJ Frost and a Shawn Williams pin at 152 to take the lead to 39-3. David Hofsess scored a major decision at 170 to start a run of four straight matches to be defeated by the Cards upper weights.

Senior Stan Socha decked his opponent at 182, while Jared Bunch scored a 4-1 decision at 195, and sophomore Jakob Esarco scored the Cards final points with a pin at 220.

During the home match, the Canfield wrestling team defeated the Spartans.

Canfield freshman Tanner English set the tone for the match defeating Spartan standout Vince Mancini 14-8. English threw Mancini to his back in the first period to take a 7-2 lead. The Spartan junior worked his way back to make the score 9-8.

Kyle West was a forfeit winner at 113, while Senior Korey Frost and standout freshman Georgio Poullas registered pins to make the team score 21-0. Canfield’s Stephen Daprile defeated the Spartans Sferra 9-2 and CJ Frost decked his opponent at 138 to stretch the margin to 30-0.

Boardman scored victories in the next three matches to cut the Cards lead to 30-16. David Hofsess started the run at 170 edging Carlile 7-4. Stan Socha and Jaret Bunch scored falls in the next two matches while Jacob Esarco won by forfeit when Boardman declined to send out their wrestler at 220. Canfield senior heavyweight Curtis Burns saw his first action of the season and pinned the Spartans Jaysen Young in the first period for the final margin.
