YOUNGSTOWN

The American Civil Liberties Union of Ohio wants to put the Northeast Ohio Correctional Center on Hubbard Road in Youngstown out of business.

An ACLU news release issued Tuesday applauded Monday’s confirmation by the U.S. Bureau of Prisons that it won’t renew its contract to house about 1,400 inmates at NOCC, which is owned and operated by the Nashville-Tenn.-based Corrections Corp. of America.

BOP gave no explanation for its decision. The contract expires May 31.

“The for-profit prison business is bad for prisoners, prison employees, communities and taxpayers,” the ACLU said in its news release.

The civil liberties group said it hopes the U.S. Marshal’s Service will cancel its contract to house about 580 detainees at NOCC.

CCA had urged the public to write letters to key federal officials and members of Congress urging renewal of the BOP contract to allow retention of 418 staff positions at the Hubbard Road lockup.
