What: If you’ve been partaking in too many holiday goodies and want to burn off some calories, then join us on our 2014 finale.

Rating: Moderate/difficult, 5 miles.

Where: Newport Wetlands Parking Lot, West Newport Drive.

TIME TO EXPLORE

When: Dec. 31, noon to 5 p.m.

What: Go to Ford Nature Center and visit our Live Animal, Discovery, and Habitat rooms, then pick up a Winter Scavenger Hunt List and look for Mother Nature’s hidden treasures. Bring a digital camera or phone to document your findings.

BRING YOUR SLED

When: Jan. 2, 1 to 3 p.m.

What: Bring your sled and enjoy a winter hike looking for animals and their tracks, then slide down Little Ski Hill.

Rating: Moderate, 1.5 miles.

Where: Lily Pond, Lily Pond Circle Trail, Youngstown

When: through January 4

WINTER CELEBRATION

When: Tuesdays through Sundays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

What: The Gingerbread Garden at the Davis Center, where you can see the area’s premier holiday plant display along Gingerbread Lane. Closed Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.

Where: Fellows Riverside Gardens, 123 McKinley Ave, Youngstown

Cost: Free

ACOUSTIC JAM

When: Jan. 4, 2 to 4 p.m.

What: Join us for a music jam. Bring an instrument or just come to listen. Beginners are welcome.

Where: Huston-Brumbaugh Nature Center, 16146 Daniel St. NE, Minerva.

Cost: Free. Registration is limited, required and closes on Jan. 14.

WOODCARVERS WORKSHOP

When: Jan. 5, 6:30 p.m.

What: Woodcarving enthusiasts of all skill levels are invited to meet woodcarver Don Danford in the Huston-Brumbaugh Visitors Center. Attendees must be at least 18 to participate.

BIRD COUNTING

When: Jan. 15, 10 to 11:30 a.m.

What: Discover the world of citizen science through bird feeding. In addition to learning how to identify and count birds in the bird observatory, we’ll also construct a basic bird feeder for participants to take home. The program will take place indoors. Participants should be 7-11 years old.
