Kent State 53, NDSU 52

EL PASO, TEXAS

Kris Brewer’s free throw with 2.9 seconds left in the game earned Kent State a win over North Dakota State Sunday in the first game of the Don Haskins Sun Bowl Invitational at the University of Texas-El Paso. North Dakota State (6-5) took a 50-48 lead with 1:38 remaining on a pair of free throws by Paul Miller, but Jimmy Hall pulled Kent State even with a pair of free throws nine seconds later. Hall scored on a layup to give the Golden Flashes the lead, but Kory Brown knotted the game at 52-52 on a hard-fought layup with 18.1 seconds remaining. Brewer, who led Kent State (8-2) with 14 points, drove to the basket and drew a foul to set up his game-winning free throw. Brown got off a mid-court shot as time ran out, but it fell short. Lawrence Alexander led the Bison with 15 points.

No. 6 Virginia 76, Harvard 27

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA.

Mike Tobey scored 15 points in the first half and Virginia held Harvard to one field goal before the break. Malcolm Brogdon also had 15 points to help Virginia (11-0) match its best start since 1992-93. Corbin Miller led Harvard (7-2) with eight points. The Crimson were coming off a 12-day break for exams.

No. 17 Maryland 73, Oklahoma State 64

STILLWATER, OKLA.

Jake Layman had 21 points and 11 rebounds and Maryland beat Oklahoma State to improve to 11-1. Layman was 3 of 5 from 3-point range and the Terrapins were 10 of 25 overall from long range. Melo Trimble had 16 points, Jared Nickens added 11, and Richaud Pack had 10 rebounds. Le’Bryan Nash led Oklahoma State (9-2) with 17 points and nine rebounds. Anthony Hickey had 16 points.

No. 23 Iowa 100, Drake 98

DES MOINES, IOWA

Samantha Logic scored on a contested drive with 3.2 seconds remaining to give Iowa a wild victory over Drake. The teams combined for 24 points in the last 1:05. Melissa Dixon hit 10 3-pointers and scored 31 points for the Hawkeyes (9-2). Logic and Ally Disterhoft each had 18 points and Logic had 11 rebounds. Lizzy Wendell hit a 3-pointer with 8.6 seconds left to tie it and finished with a Knapp Center-record 43 points for the Bulldogs (5-6). Becca Jones had 19 points and 13 rebounds, both career highs, and Caitlin Ingle, who missed a tough shot at the buzzer, had 17 points and 10 assists.

No. 1 South Carolina 84, Liberty 44

MINNEAPOLIS

A’ja Wilson had 17 points and 10 rebounds and South Carolina beat Liberty in the Subway Classic to improve to 12-0. The Gamecocks matched the school’s longest winning streak. They also won 12 in a row in 1979-80 and 2001-02. Aleighsa Welch scored 15 points and Tiffany Mitchell added 14 for the Gamecocks), who have 12 days off before beginning Southeastern Conference play. Simone Brown led Liberty (6-5) with 12 points.

No. 3 Texas 67, No. 4 Texas A&M 65

NORTH LITTLE ROCK, ARK.

Empress Davenport made a layup with 4.2 seconds and Texas overcome an 11-point second-half deficit to beat Texas A&M. The Longhorns (10-0) are off to their best start since opening 11-0 in 2008-09. The have won four straight against the rival Aggies (11-1). Nneka Enemkpali led Texas with 21 points and 13 rebounds. Jordan Jones had 21 points for Texas A&M.

No. 5 Notre Dame 64, St. Joseph’s 50

SOUTH BEND, IND.

Notre Dame freshman Brianna Turner scored 10 points in her return from a shoulder injury to help the Irish beat Saint Joseph’s. Turner was 7 of 8 from the field and blocked five shots. Jewell Loyd added 16 points for the Irish (11-1). Natasha Cloud scored 16 points for Saint Joseph’s (3-7).

No. 6 North Carolina 85, Elon 67

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C.

Allisha Gray scored 20 points and Stephanie Mavunga added 10 points and 11 rebounds to help North Carolina beat Elon in the Carolinas Challenge. The Tar Heels (11-1) led just 46-43 at halftime, but opened the final 20 minutes with a 23-8 run to take control over Elon, coached by former North Carolina star and NCAA tournament star Charlotte Smith. Sam Coffer had 16 points to lead Elon (5-4).

No. 13 Duke 89, No. 8 Kentucky 68

DURHAM, N.C.

Freshman Azura Stevens scored 17 points in Duke’s victory over Kentucky. Elizabeth Williams had 13 points and 10 rebounds, and freshmen Rebecca Greenwell and Sierra Calhoun had 13 points apiece for the Blue Devils (8-3). Jennifer O’Neill scored 17 points on 5-of-21 shooting for the Wildcats (10-2).

No. 14 Maryland 110, Coppin State 51

BALTIMORE

Brene Moseley had 18 points and eight assists for Maryland. Shatori Walker-Kimbrough added 17 points on 6-of-7 shooting for the Terrapins (9-2). Harrison finished with a career-high 12 points and eight rebounds. Amber Griffin had 10 points for Coppin State (1-9).

No. 18 Michigan State 89, No. 19 Syracuse 76

WINTER PARK, FLA.

Aerial Powers had 32 points and 17 rebounds, leading Michigan State past Syracuse 89-76 in the final game of the Florida Sunshine Classic. The Spartans (8-3) took a 72-65 lead with 5:51 left when Tori Jankoska made a pair of free throws and a 3-pointer in a 14-second span. The Orange (8-3) closed to 78-72 on Cornelia Fondren’s free throws with 2:21 left, but Michigan State made 11 of 12 free throws from there. Jankoska scored 18 of her 25 points in the second half and finished with 10 rebounds.

Becca Mills added 19 points for the Spartans. Brianna Butler had 18 points for Syracuse.

No. 19 Oklahoma State 66, Southern California 62

LOS ANGELES

Liz Donohoe scored 21 points, Roshunda Johnson added 17 and Oklahoma State rallied in the second half to beat Southern California. Oklahoma State (9-1) improved to 76-1 against nonconference opponents over the last eight seasons. Alexyz Vaioletama had 20 points for Southern California (8-3).
