Trial set in shooting

WARREN

Jeffrey Irby, 26, of Youngstown and Fort Wayne, Ind., accused of firing a gun three to seven times at a Hubbard police officer Oct. 14, will go to trial Jan. 5 unless he agrees to push his court date back.

Judge Andrew Logan of Trumbull County Common Pleas Court said Irby has until his pretrial hearing Friday to decide whether he will allow his trial date to be moved back so his attorney can hire an expert witness to analyze the state’s DNA and gun-residue evidence.

Irby said he wanted dash-cam video from Hubbard police cruisers and surveillance video from a Hubbard Circle K store.

But Gabe Wildman, assistant county prosecutor, said Hubbard police have said no such videos are available. Hubbard police said Irby fled on foot from a car stopped for a traffic violation at 11:30 a.m. Irby fired a gun toward an officer pursuing him, but the shots missed, police said.

Man pleads guilty

WARREN

Steven Balla, 32, of Euclid Boulevard in Liberty pleaded guilty Tuesday in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court to two child-pornography charges that could result in a prison term of up to 16 years. He will be sentenced after the county’s Adult Probation Department conducts a presentence investigation.

Balla was charged with two counts of pandering sexually oriented material involving a minor after investigators with the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation and the county’s Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force reported that Balla disseminated two videos containing child pornography to them. He was arrested at his home Nov. 20, 2013.
