Boardman girls soccer defeats Mooney

The Boardman varsity girls soccer team came back from a 0-4 deficit to defeat Cardinal Mooney High School 7-6. Leading the team were senior Alison Green (five goals), senior Alexis Cailor (one goal, one assist), junior Lexi Caraballo (one goal) senior Alexis Downie (one assist), freshman Cassie Stitt (one assist) and senior Kristen Huck (five saves). Boardman varsity girls soccer record is 2-1-0

Girls win home opener

The Boardman girls soccer team recently won its home opener against Champion. The junior varsity team claimed victory with a score of 11-0. Top players for the team included Cara Higgins (three goals), Cassie Stitt (one goal, three assists), Lexus Willis (four goals), Skylar Bryant (two goals), Kristen Fernberg (one goal, one assist) and Gina Tropea (one assist). Camille Holzschuh had four saves in the first half and Abby Ankrom had one save in the second half. The varsity team won with a score of 7-0. Leading the team were Alison Green (three goals, one assist), Cassie Stitt (two goals), Alexis Cailor (one goal), Camille Holzchuh (one goal), Payton Bryant (one assist) and Alisa Earvin (one assist). Kristen Huck had five saves in the first half and two saves in the second half.

BGMS volleyball victory

The seventh-grade Boardman Glenwood Middle School volleyball team started off the season strong with a win over Struthers 25-9 and 25-21. Hope Burford was a lead scorer serving eleven points while Maddy Trell played a strong defensive game. The BGMS eighth-grade volleyball team lost a tough first game to Struthers 22-25, 25-20 and 22-25. Cate Green and Kaylin Burkey were top scorers serving 17 points each. The BGMS volleyball teams are coached by Alyson Kieffer and Casey D’Ambrose.

Thomas “Chris” Smythe Memorial Golf Outing

The Thomas Christopher Smythe Memorial Scholarship Fund is honored to be able to assist a YSU student further their education in honor of a great man. Thomas “Chris” Smythe was an inspiration to many in the community and had involved himself in several activities, including rugby for Youngstown’s own Steel Valley Rugby team. Smythe lost his battle with cancer, but in order to keep his legend alive, the scholarship fund will be hosting the second Thomas Chris Smythe Memorial Golf Outing on Sept. 13 at Olde Dutch Mill Golf Course. Registration will begin at 8 a.m. followed by a 9 a.m. shotgun start. The cost is $65 per golfer if prepaid and $75 the day of with teams consisting of four players. Some of the prizes include hole in one prizes of $1000. a year membership to Olde Dutch Mill, a set of irons, as well as a new driver. There will also be a Chinese auction and 50/50 drawing.

It’s fall sports season. Neighbors wants to be there every step of the way. If you’re a summer sports coach or the parent of an athlete, we need you help. In order to get teams and players the recognition they deserve, we want to showcase them in our pages. We can only do that if you commit to sending us game reports and photos each week. If you send it, it will get in.
