The Mahoning County commissioners awarded a contract in excess of $1.1 million to the Shelly Co. of Thornville, Ohio, to pave about 12 miles of roads.
Sixty-nine percent of the project is being paid for by an Ohio Public Works Commission grant and the remaining 31 percent by county gasoline-tax and license-plate fee revenues.
County Engineer Patrick Ginnetti told the commissioners Thursday that road paving costs about $100,000 a mile.
Ginnetti said about 10 miles of roads were repaved in the county’s program last year.
The roads being repaved this year are: South Turner Road between Gibson and Kirk roads in Canfield and Austintown townships; Henricks Road between North Four Mile Run and Meridian roads in Austintown; North Hubbard Road from McGuffey Road to the Trumbull County line in Coitsville Township; Detwiler Road between West Western Reserve and Lynn roads in Beaver Township; North Palmyra Road between Duck Creek and Newton Falls roads in Milton Township; and Bandy Road between Lake Park Boulevard and U.S. Route 62 in Smith Township.
In other business, David Ditzler, chairman of the commissioners, announced the county soon will be sending an informational mailing at county expense to all 117,000 households in the county explaining how county tax dollars are spent, but that mailing will not appeal to recipients to vote for the three-quarter percent sales tax on the Nov. 4 ballot.
Ditzler said he did not know how much the printing and mailing would cost.
“We want to make sure that people know where their money is being spent,” Ditzler explained. “There’s so much misinformation that gets flooded out there.”
The commissioners also voted to close Bedell Road between Berlin Station and Leffingwell roads in Berlin Township for about 60 days beginning Monday for bridge repairs and painting.
The bridge crosses a branch of Berlin Reservoir near the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Mill Creek Recreation Area.
It is one of six major Mahoning County bridges to be painted and rehabilitated under a $2,026,000 contract the commissioners awarded in April to APBN Inc. of Campbell.
