Long drive event kicks off Greatest Week

Friday, August 15, 2014

Staff report

The Greatest Week in the Valley presented by Covelli Enterprises and The Vindicator kicks off on Saturday with the Greatest Driver qualifier at Tippecanoe Country Club in Canfield.

It’s the first of six events that will challenge the area’s best golfers against one another.

A few of the 30 spots in the men’s and women’s competition still are open. Email vindygreatest@vindy.com for details. The event begins Saturday at 6 p.m.

The top three men’s and women’s hitters will advance from Tippecanoe to compete Monday at The Lake Club in Poland at the conclusion of the Miller Lite Greatest Scramble Championship.

A field of 20 men includes inaugural Greatest Open champion Mike Porter and three-time Open final qualifier Josh Zarlenga and young long-baller Justen Vrabel

The second annual scramble championship will begin Monday at 1 p.m. with the long-drive final following at 5:30 p.m.

For both the Greatest Driver and the Greatest Scramble championship on Monday, spectators are free and encouraged.

For the second straight year, PGA Tour professional and Warren JFK graduate Jason Kokrak will make an appearance at the Greatest Scramble. After a hot start to the 2014 season, including two Top-10 finishes, Kokrak was sidelined with an injury.

He made his return last week at the PGA Championship and is excited to be back in the Mahoning Valley.

The Greatest Scramble and Driver events will lead into the fifth anniversary of the Greatest Golfer of the Valley adult tournament.

The three-day event begins on Aug. 22 at Mill Creek, culminating in championship play on Aug. 24 at The Lake Club. The event has grown in numbers every year and will exceed 300 golfers again this year.

Other title sponsors driving Greatest are Superior Beverage and inaugural partner Farmers National Bank.
