Not only do Jackson-Milton students get the chance to learn from their teachers, they also get the added bonus of learning from teacher candidates.
This year, four students from the Teacher Education Center Program at Youngstown State University are gaining experience for their early childhood degrees with students at Jackson-Milton.
The teacher candidates are working with the kindergarten through third- grade classes for 35 days as well as attending their classes at YSU. Not only are they observing the regular classroom teacher, they also are teaching their own lessons to the students.
“They are required to teach 20 lessons while integrating the Common Core Standards, technology, integrated themes, community involvement and all of the other components that come along with good teaching such as positive classroom management,” said Crystal Ratican, a YSU assistant professor.
This is a preliminary assignment to prepare them for their full-time student teaching requirement. The YSU students began teaching their lessons during March and will finish May 9 as the semester comes to a close.
