Valley Latino food fest scheduled for May 16

YOUNGSTOWN

OCCHA Inc., the city’s Hispanic American civic and cultural organization, is having its third annual International Latino Food Festival fundraiser from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. May 16 at OCCHA Social Hall, 3660 Shirley Road.

The menu offers a variety of Latino foods with combo meals, $8 and up, and an a la carte menu with prices ranging from $1 to $5. Soft drinks and beer will be sold.

Activities will include face-painting, raffles, cultural dances and musical performances throughout the day. Admission and on-site parking are free. Countries represented include Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Mexico, Peru, Puerto Rico and Venezuela.

Wildflower walk

SLIPPERY ROCK, pa.

Celebrate the arrival of spring with a 90-minute wildflower walk at the Jennings Environmental Education Center, 2951 Prospect Road, at 2 p.m. May 11.

Jennings staff will introduce the unique history, uses and folklore of the season’s first blooms. Wildflowers have been admired and revered for their beauty and usefulness as foods and medicines, and Jennings staff will explore how Native Americans, as well as early European settlers, depended on the healing powers of wildflowers for common ailments.

High school artists to display at Butler

HOWLAND

The Trumbull County Educational Service Center’s annual Student Art Show will be on display from Wednesday to next Sunday at the Butler Institute of American Art’s Howland Branch, 9350 E. Market St. Awards will be given to participating artists during an event from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday.

This annual event will showcase about 120 works of art created by about 100 high school artists in grades nine to 12, including photography, sculpture, ceramics, prints, drawings and paintings.

Westminster arts event

NEW WILMINGTON, PA.

Westminster College’s Drinko Center for Experiential Learning will host the Undergraduate Research and Arts Celebration Wednesday.

The daylong celebration includes the annual honors convocation at 3:30 p.m. in Orr Auditorium. All events are open and free.

This showcase for student creative and research efforts will feature the work of nearly 350 Westminster students who will present posters, oral presentations, documentaries, art projects, and performances.

Westminster President Dr. Richard H. Dorman will open the celebration with a brief welcome at 8:15 a.m. in the Witherspoon Rooms in McKelvey Campus Center.

Camp JCC registration

YOUNGSTOWN

The Jewish Community Center, 505 Gypsy Lane, is accepting registration for children to participate in Camp JCC — 10 weeks of summer fun for children offered in one-week affordable sessions.

The camp is for children in grades one through 10 and offers swimming, tennis, basketball, arts and crafts, dance, nature lessons, volleyball and soccer.

Campers can also go horseback riding, attend Lego camp, and golf camp and will take field trips to the Akron Zoo, Mill Creek Park, Great Lakes Science Center, and Pioneer Waterland.

HazMat detectors

LISBON

Mahoning County’s Hazardous Materials Response Team will be receiving AreaRAE monitors purchased under a state homeland security grant for this region.

The monitors will be presented by the Columbiana County Emergency Management Agency and HazMat Team and the East Liverpool Fire Department at 9 a.m. Tuesday at the Columbiana County EMA office. The monitors are photoionization detectors that help Hazmat teams detect certain types of hazardous materials.

PNC SOUP grant

WARREN

PNC Bank has awarded Trumbull Neighborhood Partnership $3,000 to support the Warren SOUP program. The money will be used to match the award raised at SOUP events during 2014, doubling the award to winning projects.

Warren SOUP, which is organized by a committee of local residents, has a public dinner of soup, salad and bread for $5 about four times per year. Tickets are sold at the door.

Diners hear presentations from no more than four local groups seeking funding. The winner receives the money raised from the Warren SOUP. The next SOUP will be 5:30 p.m. Friday at the Mahoning Valley Hope Center, 3127 Surrey Road SE.

Cafaro awards grant to school in Hubbard HUBBARD

The Cafaro Foundation has given St. Patrick School a $100,000 grant. The St. Patrick Parish, along with other donors, will match that award to underwrite the operating costs of the school.

Walk for fitness May 10 in Mill Creek Park

YOUNGSTOWN

The third annual Fitness Together 5k Run & Walk will be at 9 a.m. May 10 in Mill Creek MetroParks at the James L. Wick Jr. Recreation Area, 1861 McCollum Road.

Participants will follow a 3.1-mile loop through Mill Creek Park. All ages and ability levels are welcome, and awards will be given to the top three finishers in various age groups as well as to the overall male/overall female finisher. Entry fee is $15 on or before May 9 and $20 on race day. All participants will receive a commemorative race T-shirt and gift bag.

Fitness Together has dedicated the proceeds to help support completion of the children’s play area at the Wick Recreation Area. Registration forms can be found at www.facebook.com/ftcanfield.

Baby-sitting class

BOARDMAN

Boardman Park is sponsoring a Baby Sitting Class at 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday at the Georgeanna Parker Activity Center in Boardman Park.

The class is for ages 11-15 year and is $40 for Boardman residents and $50 for nonresidents. Students will learn basic baby-sitting skills, first aid, rescue breathing and more. Students need to provide their own lunch. Classes are limited.
