Meeting to address dog killing, issues

A public meeting will be at 7 p.m. Monday at Dorian Books, Madison Avenue and Elm Street, to form a group to address issues of concern to city residents, including, but not limited to, last Sunday’s crossbow slaying of the bookstore owners’ dog, Teddie.

“It’s not politically motivated,” and not a block watch, said Rodd Coonce, co-owner of the North Side bookstore. Coonce said the issues of concern to be addressed will be brought up by people attending. He said he hopes the group will meet monthly.

Medal speaker

Medal of Honor recipient, retired Marine Chief Warrant Officer Herschel L. Williams, will be the keynote speaker at the Boy Scouts Greater Western Reserve Council’s 2014 Friends of Scouting fund-raising breakfast at 7:30 a.m. Monday at Leo’s Ristorante, 7042 E. Market St. For information, call 330-898-8474.The event raises money for the scouting program in Trumbull County. Williams will address boy scouts and community leaders on the importance of teaching youth the values of citizenship, duty and responsibility.

He was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions in the Battle of Iwo Jima during World War II. He is the last surviving recipient of the medal from that battle.

Woman hospitalized

Youngstown

A woman was taken to the hospital after a fire at her apartment at Grovewood Manor, 3531 Hillman Ave,. at about 5 p.m. Saturday.

A fire department spokesman at the scene said residents were evacuated from the second floor, where the fire started, until it was put out, then they were allowed back into their apartments.

The spokesman said investigators are looking for a cause. A damage estimate was not available.

The city records commission will have a meeting at 1:30 p.m. Monday on the second floor of the Mahoning County Administration Building, 21 W. Boardman St.
